MEET ONE OF UNILAG'S BEST DANCE CREW

Dance is an art, it's a sequence of rhythmic steps or movements usually performed to music, for pleasure or as a form of social interaction. Dance is performed by almost everyone, no matter how little you turn your body to a beat, you are preforming dance. Dance comes in different forms according to different music types such as The popular Breakdance, B-Boy, Hip hop, Salsa, Balet and other locally oriented dances.

In Unilag there are many Dance Crews which contains pretty good dancers, among which I present to you one of the Best of them all, 'The Charachoros Dance Company'.

An interview with one of it's members reveals what the Dance Crew is all about.

What's Charachoros Dance Crew all about?

Charachoros means Joy of Dance in Greek. It's a brand that represents a team of young professionals in Dance and Entertainment. Charachoros began as a group of dancers but has enlarged over three years to accommodate not just dancers but models, photographers, fashion and graphic designers. It has become a platform on which anyone talented or creative can build themselves or also to realize their true potential being part of the team.

When did Charachoros start?

Charachoros started June 2012 and was founded by Jesse Akinwande a graduate of the University of Lagos, department of Physics/Education. I started dancing at a very young age more as a hobby but got serious as people around me saw it as a talent as i grew up.

Got engaged with a lot of dance groups as time went on, from my high school dance group to Soul Quest in Unilag, but still I was looking for something much different, a chance to fully express and showcase my love and joy for dance through freestyle.
So I became a solo dancer and later won the Amstel Malta Showtime Competition, Lagos in 2011. Then I thought of reaching out to people with similar minds and style, so I started Charachoros.

How do you see the achievements your dance crew has achieved?

One of our greatest achievements is evolving over the years from a dance crew into a Company. Charachoros Dance Company manages the crew and uses dance and entertainment as business tools to achieving company goals and project objectives. Charachoros has also established its brand of dance classes/workshops and has recorded an average turnout of over 100 dance students in unilag. We intend taking it to all other university/colleges nationwide. It aims to reach out to all student dancers to help improve and inspire joy for dance in everyone.

Where do you see your crew in the nearest future?

Paving the way for the new generation of modern dancers. Building the dance industry and becoming established as a network of successful and influential individuals of diverse careers and walk of life but having one thing in common, 'The Joy and Love for Dance'.

What have you to say to other dancers out there?

There is no shortcut to stardom, there is no onetime opportunity that'll set you up forever, you have to be consistent and constantly doing something creative to stay relevant.
A saying goes, 'If you want to go FAST go alone, if you want to go FAR go with your team'. Therefore I say go with both, work hard to become the best at what you do then network with others sharing  similar dream/vision as yours. You'll Go Fast and also go Far.
Above all, ask God for Wisdom and Direction in everything you do.
