POST UTME EXAMINATION IS ILLEGAL - JAMB REGISTRAR

Posted on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 with No comments

Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Dibu Ojerinde has declared as ‘unconstitutional’ and ‘illegal’ the Post-UTME examination conducted by tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The JAMB boss added that the examination body was not responsible for scrapping the exercise adding that it was cancelled by the Minister of Education after due consultation.
He said these while featuring on Sunrise Daily, an early morning programme on Channels TV.
Noting that there is a difference between screening and test, he said that the initial agreement with institutions was to conduct screening exercise to determine their eligibility.
His words: “Nobody say you should not screen candidates. The screening involves checking of their certificates, subject combination, Jamb scores and other prerequisites to ensure that they meet up with the requirement. It is screening, not test.
“What government asked them to do right from the beginning is screening and not test. Former President Obasanjo said this when he was in power; ‘I did not ask you to conduct another exam, all I say is screen the candidates before they come in’ and that exactly is what the minister is talking about.”
Quoting some sections of the constitution, Ojerinde stressed further that the exercise is unconstitutional and has no legal basis.
“According to section 5, sub-section 1A of the constitution, the general control for the conduct of matriculation examination for admission into all the universities, polytechnics and Colleges of Education or whatever name called is vested in JAMB.
“Section 5, sub-section 2 also states; the board shall be responsible for determining matriculation requirements and conducting examination leading to undergraduate admission and also for admission into National Dipoma and National Certificate in Education, NCE.”
Ojerinde said that a uniform screening process will soon be developed.

It's well with them and their families, and May God protect us all.

STUDENTS OF FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC AUCHI RIOT

Posted on Thursday, June 2, 2016 with No comments

There was a serious riot at Federal Polytechnic Auchi, Edo State earlier today. According to some students of the school, the protest started when three students were allegedly shot dead by security officers. They were all protesting against the management for denying them access to write exams because of non-payment of school fees. In the process of the protest, three of them were shot while some were badly injured.

Others reacted by going on a rampage, destroying school properties, setting tyres and cars ablaze, blocking the school gates and roads. The police have also reportedly invaded the current LT rowdy premises of the institution, spraying tear gas in the air to disperse the rioting students. The situation is seriously getting out of hand and concerned students are appealing to the government to quickly caution the Security Officers present at the scene of the riot, in order to prevent further loss of life.

UNILAG RESUMPTION: SCHOOL MANAGEMENT EXPRESSES PLEASURE WITH COMPLIANCE RATE..

Posted on Saturday, April 30, 2016 with No comments

The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka,  management  says it is impressed with the compliance level of students laid down for the re-absorption of students into the campus.

This is conatained in a statement released by the Deputy Registrar, Information Unit of the Institution, Toyin Adebule and issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on saturday in Lagos.

According to the statement, a total of 19,373 students had downloaded the forms as at 12:30 p.m. on Friday , April 2016.

It said that contrary to the resistance put up by the proscribed students' union leaders of the institution, students have been seen at their various faculties to sign the necessary forms ahead of the school resumption.

We reported earlier that the senate announced that the institution would resume full academic activities on May 2nd, 2016. The school had earlier been shut as a result of the unrest carried out by students due to incessant electricity breakdown and poor water supply in the school community.

Students will only be allowed to participate in the 2015/2016 first semester examinations as well as gain access to their respective halls of residence upon completion of all foirms.

MIXED REACTIONS TRAIL UNILAG RESUMPTION DATE...

Posted on Sunday, April 24, 2016 with No comments

On the 22nd of April, 2016. The University of Lagos Students received a news from the school management calling them back to resume on the 2nd of May 2016.  Rather than the normal resumption process after a protest, the information which circulated like wildfire read that students would be re admitted back into the institution and would have to sign an undertaking and indemnity form which would also bear the signature of parents/guardians and that of some school officials.

Students who fail to sign these forms wont be allowed into the school premises and also participate in the forth coming examinations which is slated to begin from the 9th of may 2016.

The school also suspended the activities of the student union body which was recently brought back in 2015 after its suspension for over 10 years.

Students went online on different social Media platforms to express themselves and speak out on the new action taken by the school authorities. some saw it as a funny step while others saw it as a bitter action which could mean that the students would have no right on thier own and also have a body to speak on their views as time goes on.

Twitter experienced  a massive meltdown as students poured out their minds with #RestoreULSU and #Newunilagrules.

Below are some reactions by students about the call back, exam date and signing of the indemnity/undertaking.
